Ara Pacis Museum

1178-Roma ara pacis fuori lontano

This museum is the first architectural work built in the historic center of Rome since the fall of fascism until today. The construction of Ara Pacis was decided by the Roman Senate in 13 b. C. to celebrate the return of Augustus from the provinces of Gallia and Spain, where the emperor, during three years, has managed to strengthen the power of Rome.

The altar was erected along the Via Flaminia, but was quickly flooded by waters of Tiber. The new museum complex was specially designed for a proper conservation of the monument which was moved so many times from one part of the city to the other.
